 Alex Cohen has a mission. The 11-year-old was troubled when he found out that people are giving up their dogs and other pets because of financial challenges. He says he cried the first time he visited the pound at 5 years old. And he has decided that he wants to do whatever he can to help animals stay in their homes and to make those that lose their homes and families more comfortable in shelters and rescues.
So for his 5th grade community service project, he is gathering supplies to help these animals.
Alex has been able to collect food, blankets and rugs, and other items, and his mom is helping out by making chew toys while his dad is gathering doghouse-building supplies. They have already donated items to Casa de Los Gatos and Cold Wet Noses. The family volunteers with Cold Wet Noses, helping to walk the rescued dogs. They are also planning a donation to Paws For The Cause, who will give some of the supplies to an Arizona Lethal White Aussies (Australian Shepherds) rescue.
Cat litter and litter boxes were greatly appreciated at Casa de Los Gatos, as were cat toys. They also received dog food, a leash, and some toys for a dog that Casa rescued. And the Cohens also got some donations from Casa: several dozen collars that are too large for cats but would be perfect for dogs.
While food is perhaps the most important item for pet owners facing financial challenges, Alex and his family also recognize the importance of items like toys and leashes that help socialize pets to make sure they can stay in their homes.
One of Alex's main motivators is his absolute love for animals. He appreciates their unconditional love and true friendship. According to Alex's dad, pet pugs Herbie the Love Pug and Sniffles are Alex's pride and joy. "They lift him up when he's had a hard time; the dogs just wag their tails, bark, and give him a lick, and he'd be feeling better."
Because Alex suffers from Asperger's -- sometimes referred to as Higher-Functioning Autism -- he has gotten picked on and is now being home schooled. (Asperger's has become more well-known recently due to the portrayal on Boston Legal of a lawyer with Asperger's by actor Christian Clemenson.)
Alex's life experience has led him to hold a special place in his heart for animals. "No matter how many friends you don't have, you always have a friend and that's your dog or cat or any other animal."

Alex is hoping the public will help out by helping him collect a variety of items which he will donate to help animals. He says, "You can give us pillows, towels, blankets, dog food and anything that will help dogs. I don't care what it is." Leashes, first aid items, collars, beds and toys are also appreciated.
